    The HiMed Cockpit point-of-care terminal enables secure access to a patient’s electronic medical record (EMR) through a pre-programmed smartcard – with RFID options also available. Through this bedside workstation, doctors and nurses are able to view history, make updates, manage prescriptions, request treatment, and set notifications  for other team members. Video conferencing enables remote interaction with colleagues and / or the patient if required.

    Patients do better when they are informed and engaged in their care. The HiMed Cockpit provides the clinical team with access to the patient’s complete medical record at the point-of-care. The patients use the terminal to access their daily activity schedule, list of care givers and their food and entertainment menus. Families can stay in touch via phone or video conferencing and patients may choose to take part in external activities such as online study.

    The bedside terminal can replace all paper records and instructions, and previous communication tools such as whiteboards. This helps to eliminate the risk of information being lost, and all records automatically move with the patient as they transition to different parts of the hospital. To assist non-English speaking patients, the HiMed Cockpit can present the user interface in 12 languages, including within the browser.



Security and privacy of patient and hospital data is a key priority in any facility. Yet, the growing volume of data can make this a very daunting task.

Data security is also a key priority for us as we plan, design and implement our solutions. The thin client architecture of the HiMed Cockpit uses read-only protected storage which helps ensure protection from malicious users and system corruption, and results in less maintenance for hospital support teams. Software images and deployments are centrally managed from the HiMed Server, which uses hashing algorithms to ensure the software images are approved. If an unauthorised modification is found, then a reload of the software is automatically executed, removing any malicious or modified system files.

    Bedside access to a patient’s medical record is available only to authorised clinical staff via a pre-programmed smart card - with RFID recognition options also available. While staff are able to make updates and changes, the read-only configuration ensures that no data can be removed or externally recorded. The HiMed Cockpit guarantees that no zero-day viruses or malware exist in its platform, which is built and tested in a highly secure and stringently audited environment.

    Each patient logs-into their bedside terminal through their own  individual smartcard to access their information and settings. This includes personal details, dietary requirements, healthcare team, treatment schedule, and entertainment viewing history. As this information is stored on the server, it moves with the patient and is not available to anyone else;-even web viewing history is removed when a patient moves on.

    Individual access to the HiMed Cockpit terminals is logged and tracked. This removes the risk associated with generic log-in details or shared user accounts. In addition to the industry standard Public Key Infrastructure for authentication of hospital staff, all communication on the HiMed platform is secured using Secure Sockets Layer encryption. This further protects the session from eavesdropping and other attacks.

    The expected lifespan of the HiMed Cockpit bedside terminals and servers is approximately 10 years. Traditional, or ‘fat client’, architecture requires renewal every 3-5 years due to end-of-life of operating systems and hardware age constraints. The centralised user operating environment allows all software upgrades and most maintenance tasks to be completed at the server.
